Trans-Pacific Partnership Attacks Civil Rights

By Naomi Fisher

If TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Trade Agreement is it such a great thing for the U.S. and our citizens, why keep it a secret?  It’s already passed the Senate. If it passes the House President Obama, who is pushing it, will sign it, making it a reality.

While voting on their party’s platform, the Democratic Caucus discussed each item brought forward. Fortunately, TPP was voted down. Opposition in the Caucus said if President Obama signs, this Agreement CAN NEVER BE VOTED ON AGAIN.

It is an agreement between countries to, yes, increase trade. BUT, it also gives too much power to the multinational companies such as: Monsanto, WalMart, Disney, and Nike among others. Multinational companies will have complete control over all natural resources. The big pharmaceutical companies will have complete control over medications, to increase prices and extend patents, thereby delaying generics. Without generics our lower income and third world populations cannot afford medications. Doctors Without Borders and their concerns:

In the unveiled sections of TPP, the language is ambiguous; there is no protection for U.S. Citizens. It reads as if anyone from one of the member countries can come in and take over whatever they wish, i.e., private property, mineral or water rights, etc. And, according to the New York Times, if our Government tries to protect us, that foreign county can SUE the U.S..

In the “Treaty” wording, it appears that the terms “Parties” and “Party” refer to the member nations. But rarely does it mention citizens’ rights.

Item #2 of the Environment Chapter [“tpp-treaty-environment-chapter”]  reads:

“2.   Taking account of their respective national priorities and circumstances, the Parties recognize that enhanced cooperation to protect and conserve the environment and sustainably manage their natural resources brings benefits which can contribute to sustainable development, strengthen their environmental governance and complement the objectives of the TPP.”

Doesn’t that sound like they will take control of all natural resources and have unlimited power to destroy environmental regulations that are necessary in providing clean water and healthy food sources? Other parts hint of that power regarding imported food stuffs brought. It does not mention labeling so we’ll know if they contain pesticides, mercury or other dangerous contaminates.

Two minute synopsis of what TPP is:

Then come back and look through the rest of the links below for the full picture of what this means for you, your family, your co-workers, your employers, owning property, affordable drug prices, affordable health care for you and your family, keeping your investments and ownership of patents, copyrights, or anything that is considered “intellectual property”.

Many articles here why TPP is a problem for USA Government and Political Platforms:

Jobs Outsourced, Internet Censored, Companies own people:

From Bill Moyers – Moyers & Company

“…Trade is good. Opening up the border so you can get bananas and they can get fertilizer is trade…. Enabling companies to move $30/hour jobs to countries with $.60/hour wages so a few billionaires can pocket the difference is not trade.  Calling TPP a trade agreement lets TPP supporters say people opposed to TPP are “anti-trade….TPP Is a Corporate/Investor Rights Agreement”

In the AmericaBlog Bill Moyers states the TPP is a death for democracy:….

From the New York Times:

“Passage in Congress is one of President Obama’s final goals in office, but he faces stiff opposition from nearly all of his fellow Democrats. …Opponents in the United States see the pact as mostly a giveaway to business, encouraging further export of manufacturing jobs to low-wage nations while limiting competition and encouraging higher prices for pharmaceuticals and other high-value products by spreading American standards for patent protections to other countries. A provision allowing multinational corporations to challenge regulations and court rulings before special tribunals is drawing intense opposition.”

TPP is seen as a door for lawsuits: “WASHINGTON — An ambitious 12-nation trade accord pushed by President Obama would allow foreign corporations to sue the United States government for actions that undermine their investment “expectations” and hurt their business, according to a classified document.”

Federal “Final Text” Agreement:

This so called treaty is a disgrace for both the DNC and the GOP.  This is nothing but the Nazi’s returning from the grave and building an empire of Capitalism for the Elite It will bring the Koch Brothers statement to fruition, I paraphrase:  Anyone making more than $250,000 a year, will be the elite.  Earn less than that, you’ll be the peasants.

The problem with multi-national agreements is that they are on auto-pilot, and have pre-designated winners and losers. Much like the “Clinton Cash” slush fund.
