The Planning Commission voted 4 to 0 against renewal of Tropical Paradise’s Conditional Use Permit, Commissioner Paul Magie being absent. The event venue is located in the Santa Rosa Valley and has been legally operating for nearly four and half years.  During her presentation county planner Michelle D’Anna explained to the Commission that Tropical Paradise never had a recorded violation. Mary Lou Diemier, the site manager testified that they have been willing to trim the renewal period from the standard ten years to five years and end events earlier.  They held an open house for the neighbors to demonstrate their new sophisticated noise metering system.  If the noise level spikes above the allowable limits the meter cuts power to the music system.  Ms. Diermier said that much of the noise has been coming from private parties, and two venues who do not have a permit.  She said that as many times as the police have been sent out to Tropical Paradise the venue never once was sited for causing a nuisance.  A group of neighbors living close to the venue spoke in defense of Tropical Paradise, saying they never hear anything.  However, there were other neighbors who spoke claiming they have been disturbed by noise, drunk drivers, cheering, clapping and loud music nearly every weekend.  The venue has only had six events this year, three in 2010, five in 2011, eight in 2012 and 22 in 2013, low numbers compared to the 60 they were allowed.

With a 4 to 0 vote against them it will be an uphill battle for Tropical Paradise should its owners decide to appeal the Planning Commission decision to the Board of Supervisors.
