Two Oxnard Men Charged with Murder for Shooting into Vehicle

Alfonso Islas (DOB 4/23/1994), of Oxnard, and Fher Ortega (DOB 12/14/2000), of Oxnard, were charged with the murder of Pete Mendez, of Oxnard, which occurred on January 11, 2020. The complaint charges each defendant with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and a special allegation that a firearm was used during the commission of the crime. It is also alleged the crime was committed for the benefit of, or in association with, a criminal street gang.  

Both Ortega and Islas were arrested for the murder of Mr. Mendez on March 14, 2020, and appeared in Ventura County Superior Court on March 19 and 20, 2020, respectively, for arraignment. Both defendants continued their arraignment to April 16, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 12 of the Ventura County Superior Court. Ortega remains in custody with bail set at $1,700,000. Islas remains in custody with bail set at $3,000,000.
