Update on Earthquake southwest of the Channel Islands

Oxnard, California – Early this afternoon Southern California received another reminder that we live in “Earthquake Country.”

At 12:29 p.m., a magnitude-5.4 quake struck 57 miles southwest of the Channel Islands. Emergency officials from Oxnard were in immediate communication with the County of Ventura Office of Emergency Services and the National Tsunami Warning Center. While the shaking was felt over a large portion of the state, this quake did not create the conditions needed to cause a tsunami, and NO tsunami warning was issued.

Police and fire representatives say there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage in either Oxnard or Ventura County. While this quake did little more than rattle some windows and nerves, it should serve as a reminder that we all need to be prepared for future earthquakes and disasters. Remember to have a minimum of 72 hours of emergency supplies on hand including food, water, medications, flashlights, first aid kit, and batteries. Also remember that when you feel the earth start to shake, “Drop, Cover and Hold-on” until the danger passes!
