Bowman left the area on foot and walked onto the northbound lanes of Highway 101. Officers, and State Parks Rangers, responded and were able to detain Bowman as he attempted to flee on foot. Officers and fire investigators were able to determine that Bowman was involved in setting several small fires in the area.
The original fire in the river bottom that was reported to the fire department reignited and was last reported to be approximately ¼ acre in size. In addition to Ventura City Fire, personnel from Ventura County Fire Department and CalFire were also called in to assist in containing the fire. The County’s helicopter was used for water drops.
It was not known if Bowman was responsible for igniting the larger fire in the river bottom, although he was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for arson.
