Vehicle Pursuit Leads to Four-Hour Stand-Off in Santa Susana Knolls

Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release

Officers surrounded a house in Simi Valley Friday morning while crisis negotiators attempted to coax 33 year old Simi Valley resident, James Carlton to peacefully exit his residence and surrender to deputies.

At about 7:40 AM, in the area of Kuehner Drive and Katherine Road, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Carlton due to the fact he had outstanding warrants for his arrest. A high-speed pursuit ensued on residential streets and Carlton eventually drove to his residence and retreated inside, creating a barricade situation. Additional deputies with specialized training were summoned to the scene. This included deputies from the SWAT team, Tactical Negotiations Unit, Sheriff’s K9 Team and Unmanned Aerial Systems Unit. Officers with the Simi Valley Police Department were also on scene and provided mutual assistance with securing a perimeter around Carlton’s residence.

After hours of unsuccessful negotiations, entry was made into the residence and Carlton was taken into custody. At the time of arrest, it was discovered Carlton was armed with a knife, which was found sheathed in his waistband. Carlton was arrested for evading deputies, delaying an investigation and his outstanding warrants. Neither Carlton nor deputies were injured as a result of the incident.

Carlton was transported and booked at the Main Jail in Ventura where he is currently being held in lieu of a $310,000.00 bail.
