Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release
On July 27th at 10am, Ventura Police Street Crimes (SCU) detectives observed a stolen vehicle leaving a parking lot on Johnson Dr in Ventura. The car had been stolen in Port Hueneme on 7/24/20. Detectives followed the vehicle and contacted additional detectives from the Ventura County Auto Theft Task Force (VenCATT) to assist. Detectives surveilled the car and saw Herrera driving it into the McDonald’s drive-through on Rose Ave in Oxnard. As he exited the drive-through, detectives stopped the vehicle and took Alberto Herrera (DOB: 5/10/90), Oxnard resident into custody without incident.
Once arrested, detectives located methamphetamine and an additional victim’s driver’s license and credit cards in Herrera’s pockets and wallet. Herrera was also in possession of “shaved” keys, which Herrera had used to enter and start the car. A “shaved key” is an altered key that can trick the locking and ignition mechanisms into unlocking and starting a car. The additional victim’s property was from a separate theft of a vehicle from a week ago in Ventura Harbor.
Herrera was arrested and transported to the Ventura County Jail, where he was booked for unlawful taking of a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a “shaved” key, possession of methamphetamine, and identity theft. A review of the Ventura County Superior Court website shows that Herrera has been convicted of grand theft, felony vehicle evading, identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.
