Ventura City Council Appoints Matt LaVere as Mayor, Sofia Rubalcava as Deputy Mayor

On December 10, 2018, during the regularly scheduled meeting, the Ventura City Council voted to appoint Councilmember Matt LaVere as mayor and newly installed Councilmember Sofia Rubalcava as deputy mayor.  Both will serve a two-year term in their appointed roles.

LaVere was first elected to the Ventura City Council in 2016.  He recently completed one year as the city’s deputy mayor and will serve as mayor for the last two years of his four-year term.  He is a native Venturan and owns a law firm based Downtown Ventura where he advises numerous local businesses and individuals on corporate, employment and real estate matters.

As a member of the council, LaVere has represented the city on the Economic Development, and Homelessness and Affordable Housing Subcommittees, as well as representing the city on the Ventura Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Subcommittee.

“I am honored and humbled to serve as mayor of Ventura, and I am excited to work with a new, diverse council that truly reflects our vibrant community,” said LaVere.  “I look forward to collaborating with Deputy Mayor Rubalcava and the entire council as we work to make Ventura the safe, prosperous and beautiful city we all desire.”

Newly elected Sofia Rubalcava was installed on Monday night for a four-year term. Born and raised in Ventura, Rubalcava represents District 1 and is a translator for the Santa Barbara Unified School District.
