Ventura College Community College Board introduces Dr. Greg Gillespie chancellor

The public is invited to welcome reception Tuesday, July 11

The Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees will introduce Dr. Greg Gillespie as permanent chancellor during a brief welcome reception Tuesday, July 11, 2017, from 4:30-4:45 p.m., prior to the Board of Trustees meeting.  The public is invited to join the Board of Trustees and VCCCD staff at the District Administrative Center located at 761 East Daily Drive, Thomas Lakin Boardroom, Camarillo, CA.  The Board meeting will be held immediately following the reception at 4:45 pm.

Gillespie began his service July 1, bringing more than 23 years of higher education experience to the position.  He is no stranger to the District, however, having served as President of Ventura College for four years.  Ventura College (along with the Ventura College east campus in Santa Paula) is one of three colleges in the District that also includes Moorpark College and Oxnard College.

District employees, including faculty, management and staff believe Gillespie is the right choice to help foster a cohesive, collegial and inclusive work environment throughout the District and the community.  “The Board is pleased to have met its goal to hire a permanent Chancellor this year and even more excited that the process led us to hire from within,” stated Board Chair Bernardo Perez.  “We welcome Dr. Gillespie to the new District office located at 761 East Daily Drive, in Camarillo, CA.  This is an exciting time for the VCCCD and we could not be more proud of the accomplishments made over the past year.”

Gillespie has the advantage of having established working relationships with District employees and community stakeholders throughout Ventura County.  He plans to use the first few months as Chancellor to begin relating to these individuals from the perspective of his new position.  “It has given me great pleasure to serve as President of Ventura College, working with a highly committed team of professionals dedicated to student achievement,” stated Gillespie.  “I look forward to supporting the Board and leadership throughout the District to continue our efforts towards developing high quality, innovative educational programs and services to better serve students and the community,” added Gillespie.

Gillespie earned a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Agronomy (Crop Science) from North Dakota State University.  He attended Yakima Valley Community College and then transferred and received a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Washington State University.  He conducted agricultural research in the public and private sectors for ten years prior to beginning community college work as an agriculture faculty member.  Gillespie grew up near Yakima, Washington.  He and his wife Kristin live in Ventura.

The Ventura County Community College District is a member of the 113-campus California Community College system, and serves more than 31,000 students annually.  The District’s three colleges- Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura- offer programs in general education for degrees and certificates, transfer to four-year colleges and universities, career technical education, and provide opportunities to engage in co-curricular campus activities.  For more information, please visit
