Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees collaborate on 2016-2019 strategic plan

The Board of Trustees, Chancellor Bernard Luskin, the college presidents, members of the Academic Senates and various governance committees – District Council on Accreditation and Planning (DCAP), Institutional Research Advisory Committee (IRAC), Planning, Accreditation and Student Success (PASS), and Policy, Legislative and Communication Committee (PLCC) – all participated in a cohesive discussion that ranged from Board professional development to marketing, enrollment management, diversity, resources and the future.
A key takeaway from the meeting was the report on institutional effectiveness presented by Ventura College Dean of Institutional Equity and Effectiveness, Phillip Briggs. Briggs reported a 21% increase in degrees, certificates, and transfers from 2012-2013 to 2014-2015; the VCCCD ranks number 15 in size out of 72 community college districts statewide, yet ranks number five in student transfers to California State Universities. The VCCCD plans to develop an Institutional Effectiveness dashboard, similar to the Diversity Dashboard recently launched by its Equal Employment Opportunity committee and Human Resources, to monitor and serve as a resource for key indicators of institutional effectiveness.
Following the strategic plan discussion, Board of Trustees Chair Larry Kennedy complimented all for the work that was presented, acknowledged the draft, and encouraged the appropriate working groups and individuals to continue their important efforts.
During the meeting, Chair Kennedy also presented a certificate of achievement from the Community College League of California to Trustee Stephen Blum for the successful completion of its Excellence in Trusteeship Program re-certification. Blum is the second trustee in the state that has completed the re-certification process. The VCCCD Board of Trustees was the first full board in which each member of the board had completed the Excellence in Trusteeship Program.
In closing the Board Study Session, Chair Kennedy congratulated everyone who contributed to making the 2016 Board of Trustees Study Session a great success.
(L to R) Stephen Blum and Chair Larry Kennedy
