Ventura County DA Sends Victim Advocates to Family Assistance Center at Las Vegas Convention Center

On Sunday, October 15, 2017, District Attorney Gregory D. Totten approved a request from the California Office of Emergency Services to send a team of three victim advocates from the District Attorney’s Crime Victim’s Assistance Unit to Las Vegas, Nevada.  This victim advocate team will assist the Nevada Attorney General’s Office and other local and federal agencies in providing services to the more than 22,000 victims present at the Route 91 Harvest Festival Concert mass shooting tragedy.

The District Attorney’s team joins teams from San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and other southern California counties.  The victim advocates are working shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Family Assistance Center set up at the Las Vegas Convention Center to assist victims needing counseling, therapy, emergency assistance, assistance with funeral and burial expenses, and notification to friends and family.  The victim advocates are also serving as liaisons with Las Vegas law enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other local agencies to help victims recover personal property that was left behind.  Advocates say that they are inspired by the resilience and courage of the victims and proud to be working alongside advocates from across California.  The Ventura County team expects to return home Saturday, October 21.

The District Attorney’s Office continues to encourage all concert attendees to contact the District Attorney’s Crime Victim’s Assistance Unit at (805) 654-3622 if they have not already done so.  Victim advocates are still providing local assistance to victims needing to complete applications for Victims of Crime Compensation as well as other referrals and assistance.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office is the public prosecutor for the county’s 850,000 residents. The office employs approximately 280 employees including attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, and other professional support staff who strive to seek justice, ensure public safety, and protect the rights of crime victims.
