Ventura County Teens Set to Soar as One of the Nation’s First Female Eagle Scouts

These Young Woman are Set to be Among Hundreds in the Inaugural Class of Female Eagle Scouts

Simi Valley teens Dana Miller & Laura Allen will make history on February 8, 2021 when they are set to become one of the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts – a prestigious achievement attained by some of the country’s most noteworthy figures Dana & Laura are among hundreds of young women who will make up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts.

“Earning the rank of Eagle Scout takes hard work and perseverance, and we are honored to recognize Dana & Laura for their significant accomplishment,” said George Villalobos, Ventura County Council Scout Executive/CEO. “Along the journey to Eagle Scout, young people gain new skills, learn to overcome obstacles and demonstrate leadership among their peers and in their communities. These benefits are invaluable for everyone, and we are thrilled that they are now available to even more youth.”

Young women have been part of Scouting for decades in co-ed programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), including Sea Scouts, Venturing, Exploring and STEM Scouts. The BSA expanded that legacy further in recent years by welcoming girls into Cub Scouts and then into Scouts BSA last February. Scouts BSA is the program for youth ages 11 to 17 previously known as Boy Scouts. Since then, tens of thousands of young women throughout California and across the country have joined the organization’s most iconic program with many, including Dana & Laura working their way toward the rank of Eagle Scout.

“I grew up in Scouting, ever since my older brother was a Cub Scout and beyond when he became an Eagle Scout. I’ve always looked up to the Eagle Scouts I know so when I was given the chance to join the Scouts BSA program and possibly become one myself I was ecstatic. My time in scouts has shaped me into the person I am today,” said Dana. Although I may go to many other places in my future, I know the skills, experiences, friends, values, and morals I have gained as a scout will be with me for my entire life.”

In remembering her experiences, Laura commented “I joined Scouts BSA because I’ve always had a love for the outdoor adventure and an appreciation for the leadership and service opportunities that scouting brings. Scouting also can grow confidence in young people and teach meaningful lessons through conducting good deeds or making the right choices based on the Scout Oath and Law that we live by. Every single aspect of scouting has prepared me for my future and the real world once I live on my own, whether it’s through helping me find a career path I might enjoy, how to work in a team and communicate to carry out plans, or how to participate in an interview and talk in front of my peers and adults. With the skills I’ve learned through Scouts BSA I am a lot more confident in public speaking, working well under pressure, and making important impactful decisions when leading a group of people.”

Eagle Scout is the program’s highest rank, which only about 6% of Scouts achieve on average. To earn it, an individual must take on leadership roles within their troop and their community; earn a minimum of 21 merit badges that cover a broad range of topics including first aid and safety, civics, business, and the environment; and they must research, organize, and complete a large community service project.

In addition to gaining skills that last a lifetime, individuals who earn the esteemed Eagle Scout rank can reference it for academic, vocational, and military recognition, including scholarships and advanced enlistment grade.
