Ventura: Couple robbed at knife-point: Man shot while walking on Saratoga St.

In two separate incidents a couple was robbed at knife-point and a man was shot from a passing car.

On December 27th, Saturday night just before 11pm, two victims reported they had been robbed at knife-point near the corner of Mills Rd. and Loma Vista Rd.

During the investigation officers learned the victims Carlos Lara, 19 years old and 20 year old Kayleen Velasquez, both Ventura residents, were walking in the area when the suspect approached them from behind and asked them for money. The suspect, only described as African American male in his 20’s, displayed a knife and demanded Velasquez give him her purse. After taking the purse, and an undisclosed amount of property, he then demanded Lara’ s wallet. When Lara could not produce a wallet, the suspect fled on foot. Lara briefly chased the suspect and last saw him running from the area of Our Lady of Assumption Church.

With the assistance of two Ventura Police K-9 units, officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect.

The victims were not injured as a result of this crime.

Just before the robbery incident, at 10:20pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center was notified of a shooting victim inside the emergency room at Community Memorial Hospital. The 31 year old victim was suffering from non-life threatening injuries to his abdomen. Officers responded and contacted the victim, who had ultimately been transferred to the VCMC emergency room.

The victim was uncooperative, although reported he had been shot by a passenger from inside a passing vehicle while walking in the area of the 1300 block of Saratoga Ave. Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate any evidence of a shooting. Several hours prior to the victim arriving at the hospital, officers responded to a report of several subjects fighting in the same area. At this time, it is unknown if the two incidents are related.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Ventura Police Department at 339-4309.
