Ventura duo arrested for rape and child pornography

The victim disclosed to officers that she was living with the suspects, 24 year old Brandon Vanwie and 20 year old Madeline Carden, both Ventura residents, in the 100 Block of N. Laurel St.  The victim was mistreated on an ongoing basis. She described how she was raped while intoxicated and another occasion where she was bound and sodomized. During follow-up interviews with the victim, she told detectives that the suspects treated her as their child. They had control of her money and important documents and even restricted who she spoke to.

On 9-3-14, Ventura Police Major Crimes Detectives conducted a search warrant at the residence of Vanwie and Carden. Detectives located evidence that the pair had conspired to get the victim intoxicated and rape her. Detectives located numerous images of suspected child pornography that the two of them had been sending to one another electronically. Detectives also located several photographs of what appeared to be a 12 to 13 year old girl walking to school. The photos were later determined to be photos taken by Vanwie of a junior high student that he had an unnatural sexual fascination with. Detectives located evidence showing that Carden also shared the same unnatural interest in the child and that she was involved in conspiring to photograph the girl. Police later identified the child and her family was contacted regarding the activity of Vanwie and Carden.

Both Vanwie and Carden told detectives that they regularly fantasized about sex acts with underage girls. Detectives located evidence that the two of them discussed various ways to lure underage girls to their home for the purpose of sexual acts. On 10-7-14, Tuesday, Brandon Vanwie and Madeline Carden were arrested and booked at the Ventura County Jail for 182 PC (Conspiracy), 261(a)(3) PC (Rape), 286(a) PC (Sodomy), 647.6(a)(1) PC (Child Annoyance) And 311.1 PC (Possession Of Child Pornography).
