Ventura | Foot Pursuit Ends with Suspect arrested for Concealed Machete near the Promenade

Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release

On July 21st at 8:33PM, the Ventura Police Command Center received a call reporting that a wanted subject (Oscar Espino 27 years, Ventura resident) was seen walking on the Promenade going towards the Pier from Surfers Point parking lot. As the first officer arrived on scene he spotted Espino on the pier. Espino knowing that he had been seen by the officer actively tried to evade the officer.

As more officers arrived, a lengthy foot pursuit ensued that lead officers from the pier to the Harbor Blvd parking structure. During the foot pursuit Espino refused to comply with orders from the officers to stop. Espino eventually made it to the intersection of Harbor and California where he was cornered by both VPD officers and a State Parks Ranger. Again, Espino refused to comply with verbal commands and he was forced to the ground and taken into custody. A search of Espino after the arrest, officers discovered that he was carrying a concealed machete hidden inside his pants.

Espino suffered minor injuries during the arrest and was transported to VCMC for a medical clearance before being booked into VCJ. Espino was arrested for 21310 PC, felony possession of the dirk or dagger and 148(a)(1) PC, misdemeanor resisting or delaying an officer as well as his warrants.

Well, I am not a lawyer, don’t play one on stage or screen, but I don’t think a machete is going to make the definition of a dirk or dagger which is what PC 21310 refers to.

Certainly raises some interesting mental scenarios as to how one runs with a machete stowed in one’s trousers. I would opine “very carefully” which may account for the him losing the foot race.
