Ventura Police make arrest in 2013 homicide case
Police have made an arrest nearly a year after Ventura resident Gabriel Gutierrez was shot on July 31 2013 while walking along a bike path. Gutierrez was found near the Ventura River Bottom on the west side of the County Fairgrounds. Patrol Officers located the victim, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators learned that Gutierrez, Erick Estrada and Timothy Adams were walking together and got into a physical altercation. At one point during the fight, the victim was shot. Estrada and Adams, who were later identified as suspects, fled the area and were last seen running northbound along the Ventura River towards West Main St.
It appears as though the parties had a verbal confrontation inside of the fair sometime prior to the shooting. The victim and the suspects ultimately left the fair and that’s when the physical confrontation occurred.
Ventura Police investigators have identified the two suspects in this homicide and charges were filed with the Ventura County DA Office on July 2nd, 2014 and arrest warrants were subsequently issued in Ventura County Superior Court for both suspects on the charges of 187(a) PC (Homicide) and 186.22 PC (Gang Enhancement).
During the investigation VPD investigators learned that Timothy Adams had fled the country shortly after the homicide and that he had recently returned and was hiding with relatives in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Ventura Police worked with Idaho and Federal Authorities in an attempt to locate Adams. When he was located, Adams was arrested leaving his father’s residence in Idaho Falls by the US Marshall’s Office and Idaho Falls Police on July 14th, 2014. He is currently awaiting extradition back to Ventura County to stand charges for the homicide.
On July 22nd, 2014 VPD investigators contacted Erick Estrada at the Ventura County Jail, where he was already in custody for another unrelated attempted homicide with a firearm, and arrested him for the homicide.
