Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release
On October 31 just past midnight residents called from a home in the 6700 Block of Sargent Lane reporting someone was trying to enter their home through a bedroom door. The reporting party also heard an unknown subject removing a screen from the window.
Multiple officers quickly arrived and located a subject within the fenced backyard of the residence. Upon first contact by officers, the subject tried to force his way in the backdoor of the residence. The subject was unsuccessful and he was detained in the backyard. After ensuring the residents were out of harms way, officers moved through the home to the backyard and took the subject into custody without incident.
Investigating officers determined the screen from the home had in fact been removed. The suspect in this case, John Lewis Peters, 26 years old, vagrant, had no relation to the residents.
Peters was booked into Ventura County Jail for 664/459 PC attempted residential burglary and 647(h) PC prowling.
No parties were injured as a result of this crime and arrest.
Fortunately the victims in this case had their doors locked and the suspect was unable to gain entry to the home. The Ventura Police Department urges all residents to secure their vehicles and residences as a matter of routine.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the crime should contact Ventura Police Watch Commander at (805) 339-4416.
