Ventura Water Announces VenturaWaterPureDemonstration Facility
clinic arial, generic sans-serif;”>On Thursday, Ventura Water unveiled the VenturaWaterPure Potable Reuse Demonstration Facility to distinguished guests, days before its official opening for public tours on July 18, 2015. VenturaWaterPure is a pilot project for the City of Ventura, who, along with other water providers throughout California, is investing in safe and sustainable ways to meet long term water supply demands. The City currently provides recycled water from the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility to two golf courses and landscape irrigation in the Harbor and Olivas Drive areas. Adding “potable reuse” purification technologies at the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility will extend Ventura’s use of “local” sources of water which is proven, drought–resistant, locally developed, and reliable.
Ventura Mayor Cheryl Heitmann upholds this sentiment, enumerating the importance of innovative processes: “The City of Ventura relies entirely on local water supplies which have become limited during this unprecedented drought. The VenturaWaterPure demonstration facility brings attention to the value of potable reuse as a renewable resource that can provide a cost effective and sustainable supply of high quality water. It will help Ventura to expand our water supply portfolio and improve supply reliability.”
It is important to note that Ventura Water is not alone in looking for ways to improve water supply by leveraging wastewater resources. The multi-barrier water purification process has already been successfully used by San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County which now produces 70 million gallons of purified water per day. Ventura Water has been investigating options for additional water reuse for many years. The findings of these studies have shown that potable reuse will have the largest benefit for the City. As such, Ventura Water has chosen to partake in a nationwide study that evaluates blending options with other water resources prior to the delivery of drinking water to customers. There are three distinct benefits in exploring this option.
• Expanded Water Supply – As a community, we need to look into new, more diversified and sustainable water supplies.
• Improved Water Quality – Utilizing ultra-pure water to blend with high mineral content groundwater sources to improve existing water sources.
• Compliance with the Santa Clara River Estuary Consent Decree – Potable reuse enables the City to reduce the amount of treated wastewater discharged to the estuary.
Ventura Water invites all members of the general public to sign up for an in-depth tour of the Potable Reuse demonstration facility. Tours of the facility will be held every Saturday from 9am to 11am, and will be limited to 20 people. Please sign up for public tours before noon the Friday by calling (805) 677-4131. Private groups interested in weekday tours can also be accommodated with advanced notice. Sign up for your tour today!
