Veterans in the Arts

A grant opportunity for arts programs serving veterans and their families

“The arts, in my opinion, offer a non-stigmatized environment where veterans can choose their own method of healing, and can go and create what I call ‘posttraumatic strength.”‘- Nolen V. Bivens, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, Retired

The California Arts Council offers financial support for arts projects that enrich the lives of our veterans and their families through its Veterans in the Arts (VIA) program.

VIA seeks to increase equity, access, and opportunities for veterans to participate in quality arts programming that is sensitive and responsive to their unique experiences. Up to $18,000 in project support is available for nonprofit arts organizations, local arts agencies, and veteran’s assistance agencies reaching veterans and their families.

Applicant organizations must have a two-year history of arts programming, and must be one of the following:

  • California-based nonprofit arts organization
  • Local arts agency or unit of government
  • Veteran’s assistance agencies may be eligible. See program guidelines for details. Examples may include, but are not limited to:
Veterans Service Organizations, Vet Centers, local veterans commissions, veterans housing and medical facilities, and homeless and disabled veterans support agencies
