Walters: Will California Politicians Really Address Housing Crisis or Settle for Tokenism?

Los Angeles is looking at creating a new tax on homes—an “affordable housing tax”.  The cost will be $1100 a year.  Does that sound like the city is trying to make housing affordable?  San Fran demands that large housing projects be put to a vote for the whole city—does that sound like a way to lower the cost of building housing projects?  The State put a new regulation on the building of new homes—they must have solar panels, like it or not.  Does that sound like a way to lower the cost of housing?

“The shortage has sent home prices and rents soaring, particularly in coastal urban areas, thus forcing many working families to spend half or more of their incomes for shelter – if they can find it. The crisis not only exacts a human toll but is an existential threat to the state’s economy.

Housing authorities bluntly say that the core issue isn’t a lack of potential housing development investment but rather the reluctance of local governments to approve new projects, particularly high-density complexes for low- and moderate-income renters, because of “not in my backyard” resistance among homeowners and voters.”

Instead of making housing more affordable, government is doing all it can to make it more expensive.  We are moving in the wrong direction and the Democrats are making sure California has a population of the very rich, the very poor and the illegal alien.  They hate the middle class.
