The Washington Redskins plan to let rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins compete for the starting job.
The former Ohio State star was selected 15th over all in the 2019 draft and will compete against Colt McCoy and Case Keenum for the job in an open competition.
“We’re going to go at it. Throw the ball out there let these guys compete really. I think he obviously displayed enough of a skill set to warrant the 15th pick in the draft and to give him an opportunity to see how far he can take this thing without a doubt,” head coach Jay Gruden said when discussing the open quarterback competition and Haskins Saturday, according to ProFootballTalk.

Obviously, the Redskins didn’t draft Haskins to ride the pine. They drafted him to be the face of the organization. He can’t do that from the bench.
However, very few rookie quarterbacks are ready to roll on day one. Most require lots of time to adapt to the NFL game. (RELATED: Case Keenum Says He Hopes To Make Dwayne Haskins ‘Better’ During QB Competition)
I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Case Keenum took the first snaps to start the season given all his experience, but he’ll be on a short leash.

If things head south this season in Washington, you can expect Haskins to get thrown right into the fire. He’s got a gigantic arm and a history of winning.
Guys like that often play sooner rather than later in the NFL. At the very least, it sounds like the Redskins are going to give him every chance to win the job.
After watching what Haskins did at Ohio State, I can’t wait to see how his game translates to the NFL.
