We Are Americans

By Michael Greer

You remember the “shoe bomber” Richard Reid, don’t you?  Did you know he has had a trial, been found guilty and sentenced?  Did the media cover the trial?  Do you know as much about him as you know about Jodi Arias?  I didn’t think so.  Why do you think that is?

What struck me about the Richard Reid case were Judge William Young’s comments to that evil waste of humanity.  Please indulge me and read the following and share it with everyone you know.  The Judge’s words were profound and what we want to hear from every American leader.

“Now, let me explain this to you. We are not afraid of you or any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is too much war talk here and I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in this court, we deal with individuals as individuals and care for individuals as individuals. As human beings, we reach out for justice.

“You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. Whether the officers of government do it, or your attorney does it, or if you think you are a soldier, you are not—-you are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not meet with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists. We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

“So war talk is way out of line in this court. You are a big fellow. But you are not that big. You’re no warrior. I’ve known warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal that is guilty of multiple attempted murders. In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and he said:

“You’re no big deal.

“What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have, as honestly as I know how, tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. What was it that led you here to this courtroom today?

“I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty, and admit you are guilty, of doing? And, I have an answer for you. It may not satisfy you, but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.

“It seems to me, you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom. It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea. It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom, so that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely. It is for freedom’s sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of you before other judges.

“We Americans are all about freedom. Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties. Make no mistake though. It is yet true that we will bear any burden; pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. The day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will long endure.

“Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America , the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice, is in fact being done. The very President of the United States through his officers, will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.

See that flag, Mr. Reid? That’s the flag of the United States of America . That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom. And it always will.

Mr. Custody Officer. Stand him down.”

Reading this makes me weep.  “Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom”.  That was how it was from our founding but it no longer is true.  As I write this Congress is debating taking our 2nd Amendment rights from us, not by amending the Constitution as it is required by law, but by fiat.

The blame for terrorism is being placed on guns, not on the terrorists.  No one is talking about Islam, jihad, the caliphate, that homosexuality is not allowed in Muslim countries, that Sharia can’t be separated from Islam, or how incompatible their culture is to ours. Our President, Congress and the media are only focused on guns.

No mention that the worst terrorist attack, causing 2996 deaths, was committed with planes.

Democrat Senator, Joe Manchin

At the same time, Democrat Senator, Joe Manchin is saying the problem is “due process”. These are words I NEVER believed I’d hear in this country.  “Due process” is what has set us above other countries.  Judge Young’s words explained the value of due process and how important it is to our country.  It has never been a partisan issue.  We have defended this idea.  Better a guilty man go free than an innocent man be deprived of his Liberty.  The most egregious error the justice system could commit was the denial of “due process”.

There is also no mention of the fact that the FBI had investigated this man (I refuse to use his name) three times.  I don’t believe, for a minute, the FBI is that incompetent.  And now we learn Disney ALSO reported him to the FBI.  Disney believed he was surveying the area. I would think part of any FBI investigation into a suspected terrorist would be to check their social media.  OBVIOUSLY, they didn’t.

This man had cheered when 9/11 happened.  Being born in the United States does NOT make someone an American.  He was a US citizen by law but he was never an American.

The FBI agents aren’t at fault. This is coming from the top.  The “Countering Violent Extremism” Act prevents them from doing any investigation into mosques or Muslim communities unless someone alerts them to suspicious activity.  Even then, they are to give the benefit of a doubt to the Muslim and assume the complainant is Islamaphobic.  This administration has deemed Islam the “peaceful religion”, and therefore, not to be investigated.  Our law enforcement and investigative agencies are hamstrung by the “Countering Violent Extremism” Act, so called to make you think it was to investigate all terrorism wherever it comes from.  It is to investigate you and me, we’re the ones who have been labeled “violent extremists”.  It only allows investigation of an Islamist through members of the Muslim community.

The FBI agents aren’t at fault, this is coming from the top.  We are under assault, not just by Islam Extremists, but by our own government. Guns didn’t cause the massacre in Orlando, or San Bernardino, or Fort Hood or any of the other terrorist attacks.  Richard Reid used a shoe bomb, 9/11 terrorists used planes.  These attacks were caused by Islamists who hate the very freedom Judge Young spoke of and the failure of this administration to combat it.
