Mathew (age 9) and Luke (age 12), bounded out of the car with the their masks securely in place and raced to wave and yell greetings to the other members of their group. They were so excited! The brothers had not been able to go on any outings or see their friends from their church’s Trail Life Group since COVID restrictions began. They could not wait to get their poles and learn to cast their lines off the pier with their family and friends. During the day, they were even able to use hoop nets to see some of the sea life close-up. Their Mom Rosie was happy because the event was organized so families stayed together and were spaced apart from other groups. She was incredibly appreciative of the experience. She shared, “The boys had a great time! This was the highlight of 2020 for us. Without the Guppy Program, we would not have had the opportunity of these lifechanging experiences and the love of a new hobby.”
Thanks to you, our community partners and generous loyal donors, we were able to help our local youth and families “Catch A Memory”. Even during these restrictive times, 2020 was a record setting year for Reel Guppy Outdoors. We surpassed the milestone of reaching over 3,000 youth since our inception and in 2020 almost 400 youth participated despite the challenges! We launched our educational workbook series with the Catch A Memory Activity Book, introducing youth to fishing and environmental stewardship. And, we held our first Zoom classroom workshop with a local school utilizing the new activity book.
To see us in action, take a look at this video of one of our boat trips to the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary with Captain Rollo’s Kids at Sea. This video was filmed and produced with the assistance of Malachi, one of our very own Guppies!

To learn more about our achievements this year, check out our Facebook page! Help us bring the ocean to more children like Mathew and Luke. Your generosity will allow us to develop programs that will reach even more children and families. Even with these uncertain times, Reel Guppy Outdoors is here to ensure that our youth have educational experiences outside of their normal education classrooms and that they and their families can experience the outdoor treasures that are right here in our backyard.
2021 promises to be exciting for Reel Guppy Outdoors! This year, we plan to intensify our focus on family engagement and education. We intend to hold 7 public Guppy Pier Days for youth and families. And, we have in the works 6 private activity days for our community’s most vulnerable youth and families. We will continue our Reel Guppy Outdoors workbook series with 3 new Activity Books – the next focusing on “Exploring the California Kelp Forest”. And, we will be holding more Zoom workshops with local schools and developing monthly educational content to keep youth engaged. In addition, we intend to launch our Guppy Ranger Youth Mentorship Program.
Getting youth and families out of the house and into the outdoors is more important now than ever!
Please consider investing in Reel Guppy Outdoors as we invest in our community’s children & the stewardship of our unique Southern California ecosystem.
