Wooden Boats on Display for Father’s Day

By Raven West

The 2nd Annual Channel Islands Maritime Museum “From the Tree to the Sea” Wooden Boat Show was, once again, a Father’s Day treat for dads, moms and kids.

Museum Executive Director Peter Crabbe was just as excited to be part of the experience as the guests, who had the rare treat of climbing aboard the world famous Cheerio II, a California Historical Vessel once owned by actor Errol Flynn.

The Cheerio II isn’t just an impressive museum piece. Skipper and owner Dick McNish, along with crewman Scott Harrison, enters 6 to 7 races every year.  In 2016, the Cheerio II crew won the Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) Newport to Ensenada 125 mile race with an elapsed time of 20:38:31.

Errol Flynn would be very proud.

Another wooden vessel on display was MUGGS, a powerboat built in 1930, now owned by June and Graham Wilson who purchased the boat in 1976. The interior was elegantly decorated with plenty of room for two to sail away into the sunset!

There was also a floating wooden tiki hut and bar. Although there wasn’t any food or alcohol on the hut, guests entering the event were greeted by Ruben Juarez of K.O. Tacos with a plate of deliciously grilled chicken or beef tacos and hot dogs wrapped in bacon.

There were games for the kids, including a sail boat race driven by “puff-power”. Jesslyn Gomez beat her brother Jason. The race wasn’t even close!

“This museum has so much to offer the community,” Crabbe remarked. “We want to welcome all residents of Oxnard, Channel Islands, Ventura and surrounding cities to stop by and visit our museum and gift shop often. We always have special one-of-a-kind events like these beautiful wooden boats that you won’t find anywhere else in the world!”
