Setting Brushfires of Freedom by Don Jans

Writing critique groups forming in East Ventura County cities | Learn on March 23 at Goebel Center

An organizing meeting will be held Monday, March 23, for writers wanting the support and help from a critique group of other writers. Groups will be forming for Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, and Simi Valley. The evening will discuss how a group is organized and ran, plus the basic rules and structure of successful groups.

The Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network(SPAWN), a national online literary nonprofit, is hosting a get-together. The purpose of the meeting is to form groups to help with writing projects. The meeting will be at 7 pm on Monday, March 23, at the Goebel Adult Center in Thousand Oaks.

“During this meeting,” said Kathleen Kaiser, President of SPAWN, “we will go over how to organize a critique group, general guidelines for success, helpful reference books, and a demonstration of how a critique goes. Then everyone can sign up for a group working on fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and children’s manuscripts in their community.

“When I thought I had finished my first novel, I joined a critique. It opened my eyes to small but important details that I had missed. By working with the group, my book became a much better final product. I believe in the power of a productive, instructive writers group.”

Each group that forms will determine meeting times, location, and frequency. For the best results, the group needs to find the best way to work with each other. Over time, the group will gel. And these are all free workshops numbering from four to six writers, so each person receives equal time spent on their manuscripts.

“We held a similar meeting in Ojai last month and two groups have already formed,” said Ms. Kaiser.

After the presentation by Ms. Kaiser in Thousand Oaks, everyone is encouraged to sign up and meet other writers. Each writer in attendance will have a name badge with their genre so they can find like-minded writers. There will be tasty-treats and wine for all in presence. There is a $5 fee to attend that covers the cost of the evening.
