You Just Did WHAT ?

EditorialBy Phil Erwin

Speaking Wednesday at a Chicago community center, President Obama endeavored to explain (sell) his recent actions regarding immigration. He pointed out that immigrants account for a fourth of business start-ups, and that 40% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. Actually most U.S. businesses are started by immigrants or their descendants. But the President was implying there is serious opposition to the basic concept of immigration.

There is not. Virtually no one in the nation wants to seal borders against all immigration.

What sensible citizens should want to do is to seal borders against all undocumented immigration. There are many reasons to do this, but the most important one in this new age of Al Qaeda/ISIS is that unless and until we do, we can not know when terrorists infiltrate our borders.

Mr. Obama found himself facing hecklers protesting the fact that he had not done what they wanted – which apparently included ceasing all deportations, since one of them had a sign that demanded, “Obama Stop Deportations Now.”   Apparently they are OK with allowing ISIS in, and the Mexican Mafia to stay.

Now, Obama is not particularly fond of naysayers. His message to Republicans is pretty much: Sit down and shut up. (I’m paraphrasing, but I think that effectively conveys both tone and intent.)

But when it comes to hecklers while he’s speechifying, they get a more polite, patient response from Obama. He smiles. He pretends to listen. Then he takes time to explain wherein their thinking is amiss. Which is exactly what he did this time:

“What you’re not paying attention to,” he said, “is the fact that I just took an action to change the law… The way the change in the law works is that …”

You can follow this link if you want to read the rest. The rest is not what’s important. What is important is this statement:   I just took an action to change the law.

Pardon me, Your Highness… You did what?

Let’s all get abundantly clear on this point: Mr. Obama cannot, repeat NOT, just “change the law.” But he believes that he just did, and furthermore, he fully intended to. That is an unconstitutional perspective excusing an illegal act that is absolutely addressable by the unwelcome (and unlikely) process known as impeachment.

As any so-called Constitutional scholar would be well-aware.

The exact phrase that applies is found in Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, which states that the President shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed. It does not say he can change the law if he wants; it does not say he can ignore the laws he doesn’t like. It says faithfully executed. To fail to do so is to fail his fundamental oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

You don’t “preserve, protect and defend” by changing. That prerogative is exclusively given to the Congress by Article I.

Of course, Mr. Obama knows very well what the Constitution says. He just doesn’t particularly care what it says. He doesn’t care whether he has the legal authority to make (or change) laws; he simply believes he should be able to. And that’s enough for him.

That our President intended to violate this legal framework and believes he has pulled it off should weigh mightily, both on his conscience (which it will not) and on our collective patriotic concern. Which it must. Because if he gets away with it, America really will be over.

Over and out. Done. Gone.

America will have been “Fundamentally transformed,” just as he promised to do in his 2008 campaign. And the change will be this: We will no longer be a government Of the People, By the People and For the People; a nation of laws which guarantee our liberties. We will have been transformed, by Obama’s deliberate intent and our lapdog Liberal press’ tacit approval, into a nation that is owned, operated and disposed of however the current crowd of Elites chooses. Just like Russia. Just like Cuba. Just like Venezuela. Just like every single despotic empire that has crashed and burned in that historical ash-heap that welcomes all purveyors of Imperialism, Communo-Socialist “perfection” and other forms of political stupidity.

You don’t believe me? Jonathan Turley, a real Constitutional scholar and Professor – and a Liberal – has stated this will lead to a Constitutional crisis, and has called the Obama era a “Constitutional tipping point.” Tip too far, and you can’t tip back. You’re done.

Gone. Over.

Obama’s audience applauded his assertion that he had “changed the law.” They thought he meant that he has “fixed” the law – which he most certainly has not. But even if he had “fixed” the immigration system, it wouldn’t matter. Because he has broken the nation itself.

The audience, like most of the bulk of the nation’s press corp and most Democrats, and even some Republicans, are just not politically plugged in enough to get that. A fact on which Mr. Obama is relying. Because if you can’t tell he’s broken your country, you won’t object.

So if you think he’s “fixed” anything, you’re certainly not alone.

And we’ll have plenty of company in that ash-heap.
