A Time for Choosing Speaker Series, Senator Jack Reed, and More from the Reagan Library Archives

The series derives its name from the iconic 1964 address Ronald Reagan delivered to support Senator Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign. A political newcomer at the time, Ronald Reagan presented the country with a choice between “man’s old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order” and “the ant heap of totalitarianism.”

Speakers will include leading intellectuals, U.S. representatives, U.S. senators, governors and emerging 2024 presidential candidates. They will embody a range of viewpoints: As then-Governor Reagan said in 1967, “There is room in our tent for many views; indeed, the divergence of views is one of our strengths.”

Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will deliver the first address of the series at the Reagan Library on May 27th, 2021, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence on June 24, 2021, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on July 26, 2021. Additional confirmed speakers include:

Ambassador Nikki Haley, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.
Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal Columnist
Senator Tim Scott, U.S. Senator for South Carolina

“It is a great honor to kick off the A Time for Choosing series,” said former Speaker Paul Ryan. “I look forward to addressing these fundamental and timely questions, but more importantly I am eager to hear how other Republican and conservative leaders, each with their own convictions and priorities, address the same questions. I am confident that our substantive, reasoned dialogue will do a service to the legacy of President Reagan and the party he once led.”

The virtual event will feature remarks from Senator Jack Reed, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Chairman Reed’s comments will focus on defense policy and strategic competition in the new administration, transforming the force to ensure military readiness, and the FY22 National Defense Authorization Act. Following his keynote remarks, Chairman Reed will participate in a moderated discussion with Reagan Institute Director Roger Zakheim.

This programming is hosted by the Center for Peace Through Strength (CPTS) which promotes U.S. national security policy grounded in President Reagan’s philosophy that a strong American military is the best deterrent against aggression and safeguard for peace.
