Angry Abortion Activists Protest Outside Kavanaugh, Roberts Homes

Between 50 to 100 protestors gathered outside Justice Kavanaugh’s Chevy Chase, Maryland, home, police told The Daily Wire on Saturday evening. The Daily Wire observed that the lights were on and the house was brightly lit. It was unclear whether the Kavanaugh family was home.

Police said they are anticipating more protests throughout the week since pro-abortion groups nationally have called for large-scale backlash to news that Roe v. Wade may soon be overturned. Ruth Sent Us, one of the groups organizing these protests, has also urged protestors to “stand at or in a local Catholic Church” on Sunday, Mother’s Day.

“I don’t think there is a way to change Justice Kavanaugh’s mind, what I think there is, is a way to convince other people there is a fight worth fighting for,” one young man wearing a “1973 to infinity” shirt underneath a rain poncho told The Daily Wire.

“And when you look at the 60s and you look at other protest movements throughout this country and throughout the history of protest movements, people need to see that energy and they need to feel that energy so they get up and do something, too,” he said. “When enough people disobey, the law is changed.”

The protestor, who The Daily Wire observed arguing with police as the authorities told him that he could no longer be protesting in the suburban Maryland neighborhood, said that “people will tell a friend” about the protesting outside the justices’ homes.

“They’ll tell a friend they were here, they made a statement, they felt the power of something, and they’ll go and tell somebody else,” he added. “That’s people power, that’s how it works, that’s grassroots, that’s the whole heart of it.”

The protestors are reacting to a leaked draft opinion showing that the court is likely preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade. Following Monday’s news about the draft opinion, protests took place outside the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., in Los Angeles (where protestors violently clashed with police) and in New York City.

Ruth Sent Us had posted a map on its website that listed the street names where Amy Coney Barrett, John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Neil Gorsuch each live. Google removed this map on Friday for violating its terms of service.

Protestors in the justices’ neighborhoods had largely dispersed by about 8:30 p.m. following the arrival of at least five police cars, according to The Daily Signal’s Doug Blair, whose footage shows the crowds chanting as they march through the wealthy neighborhoods.

The Daily Wire observed police citing state code and telling protesters that although they supported their First Amendment rights, they still needed to “cease and desist and leave the area,” noting that if protestors failed to comply, they might be “subject to arrest.”

Section 3-904 of the Maryland state code on unlawful picketing and assembly states that the “protection and preservation of the home is the keystone of democratic government,” noting that members of the community must be able to “enjoy in their homes a feeling of well-being, tranquility, and privacy.”

Maryland state code also says that “the practice of picketing before or about residences and dwelling places causes emotional disturbance and distress to the occupants,” adding that “the purpose of this practice is to harass the occupants of the residences and dwelling places.”

Anyone who violates this section of Maryland law is guilty of a misdemeanor and may be “subject to imprisonment not exceeding 90 days or a fine not exceeding $100 or both.”

On Saturday morning, former Vice President Mike Pence called on President Joe Biden to “speak out forcefully” against protestors planning demonstrations at the homes of the Supreme Court justices and at Catholic masses.
