    Budget Response 2022

Statement by Tim Edwards, President of Cal Fire Firefighters, responding to the budget being proposed today by Governor Gavin Newsom.

“No elected official in my lifetime has been dealt a tougher hand than the first four years of Governor Newsom’s administration. While COVID has altered our social structure, drought and climate change have resulted in fires of such catastrophic nature as to create a New Normal.

“The Governor has not blinked.  His careful management has allowed Californians who have endured the crisis to have faith that the can-do spirit of California has not been lost. The recent rain brings optimism.  The season is early, and we can hope for more. This budget reminds us, however, that preparation is premised on pragmatism, smart money-management, prioritizing expenditures and having a long-view of our problems.

“Cal Fire Firefighters appreciate very much that the Governor and the Legislature recognize the difficult hours and harsh conditions under which our men and women have worked.  This budget earmarks resources for staffing and infrastructure that will enhance the protection of our communities. Firefighters who work months without a break will also be able to take leave to recover and see their families. The respect and support of our firefighters have been a hallmark of this Governor. “

Cal Fire is the largest fire department in the United States. Mr. Edwards is a career firefighter for Cal Fire who was elected president by his peers.
