California State Auditor Extends Deadline for 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission Supplemental Application

The California State Auditor announced today she is extending the deadline to submit the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission supplemental applications due to the PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs affecting over one million Californians. Applicants now have until October 20 at 11:59 p.m. to submit their application online, which consists of essay questions and requires three letters of recommendation.

“Due to the unprecedented power outages, which have left roughly a million Californians without power, and several fires, we are extending the supplemental application deadline to accommodate the many applicants who have called us concerned that they will not be able to meet the deadline due to circumstances beyond their control,” said Elaine M. Howle, California State Auditor. “We recognize these are historic and difficult times and we want to ease the burdens for those who are experiencing power outages.”

The supplemental application period, which was set to close on October 13, is open to qualifying applicants who submitted an online application during the initial application period. Supplemental applications are submitted online at .shapecaliforniasfuture.auditor.ca.gov

“Rather than make all of those affected by the power outages and fires submit requests for reconsideration, we believe extending the deadline through Sunday, October 20, 2019, at
11:59 p.m. is the right thing to do.” said Howle. “This extension should permit applicants to deal with the outage and restoration of power and still have time to submit their applications and obtain letters of recommendation.”

About the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission
Every ten years, after the federal government publishes updated census information, California must redraw the boundaries of its Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts. In 2008, California voters passed the Voters FIRST Act authorizing the creation of an independent Commission comprised of 14 members. The 2020 Commission will include five Democrats, five Republicans, and four who are either registered without, or “independent” of, any political party (decline-to-state or no party preference) or with another party. The Commission is responsible for drawing the lines of each district. The supplemental application period for new Commission members runs from August 21, 2019, through October 20, 2019, and is open to qualifying applicants who submitted an online application during the initial application period.
