CHANNEL ISLANDS NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL OXNARD PREPARATION FOR HURRICANE

    News Release

Weather Update from from Scott Brewer, Oxnard’s Emergency Services Mgr, regarding Hurricane Hilary and the impact we may see in Oxnard and the surrounding areas.
He will be updated via NWS webinars and County OES calls Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service and Ventura County Sheriff Emergency Services are continuing to monitor what is now Hurricane Hilary. It is still too soon to determine the exact track of this storm, but as of now we are looking at it impacting our county. A flood watch has been issued for LA and Ventura counties in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. For updates on the developing storm, please visit Los Angeles, CA (weather.gov) and/or National Hurricane Center.

    Hurricane Hilary
Please spread the word that it may get some pretty heavy rains and some flooding so batten down your hatches.

Keep track of things at the National Hurricane Center and at VC Emergency

This weekend would be a good time to purchase a NOAA weather radio if you do not already have one.
It will wake you up if things go sideways in the middle of the night.

    Disaster Preparedness:  Tsunami Awareness presentation
Scott Brewer gave a Tsunami Awareness presentation last week.  Here are the bullet points.
    1) On Sunday, July 16th 10pm, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake happened in Alaska.  This caused major concern and put Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California on alert for a Tsunami.  It took a little over an hour to hear whether we would have to evacuate our Oxnard Coast. (We didn’t 🙂 The total time for evacuation from a Tsunami caused by an Alaskan earthquake is approximately 5 hours.  All first responders were put on notice right away.
    2) Take away from that is definitely sign up for VC Alert for emergency notifications in Ventura County.  Your notifications will be based on your address. It is free and only for Ventura County.
    3) Purchase a NOAA weather radio (sample) that has an alarm that will definitely wake you up in the middle of the night!

    4) Check out the USGS website where you can sign up for Notifications about Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano  and the Shake Alert.
    5) You are NOT in the Tsunami Zone if you are a mile away from the coastline.  The Oxnard Coast residents need only to evacuate 1 mile in to avoid most Tsunamis.
So stay put so those needing to evacuate have clear roads.
    6) An evacuation bag (Go Bag) is best kept in a bag on wheels 🙂

The Channel Islands Neighborhood Council is an all-volunteer organization representing the waterfront communities of Mandalay Bay, Harbour Island, Westport, and Seabridge. The Neighborhood Council program was created by the Oxnard City Council to effectively involve members of our communities in our local government decision making process.
