“Getting shot hurts. Still my fear was growing because no matter how hard I tried to breathe it seemed I was getting less & less air. I focused on that tiled ceiling and prayed. But I realized I couldn’t ask for Gods help while at the same time I felt hatred for the mixed up young man who had shot me. Isn’t that the meaning of the lost sheep? We are all God’s children & therefore equally beloved by him. I began to pray for his soul.” – Ronald Reagan, handwritten diary entry regarding March 30, 1981

Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Reagan’s life – that fateful day when Ronald Reagan and three others were shot. Join us tomorrow for a panel discussion on the day with four extraordinary witnesses to this history, as they discuss the moments leading up to the shooting, the actual shooting, and their remembrances of the day and days after. Our panel includes:

    • Former United States Secret Agent Ray Shaddick, who helped fellow agent Jerry Parr on getting President Reagan into the limo
    • Former United States Secret Agent Tim McCarthy, who risked his own life to save the President, and got shot in the process
    • Former White House Advance Staffer, Rick Ahearn, who’s quick actions helped to save the life of White House Press Secretary James Brady
    • Former White House Speechwriter Mari (Maseng) Will who, having drafted the President’s speech that day, was walking just in front of the president when shots rang out.
