Coastal Cleanup Day in the Arroyo

California Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 17 from 9 am – noon!

Come join the City of Moorpark as we participate in the California Coastal Commission’s Coastal Cleanup Day right here in our backyard in a2022coastal_eng  portion of the Arroyo Simi!  Bring your sunscreen and hat, gloves, sturdy shoes, a mask, a bucket, and your reusable water bottle and meet us at Villa Campesina Park.

This year is the 38th annual Coastal Cleanup Day in California.   The California Coastal Commission has some interesting information on its website about coastal cleanup days. In 1993, with 50,405 volunteers, California’s Coastal Cleanup Day hit the Guinness Book of World Records as the “largest garbage collection” ever organized!  They also note that efforts have spread inland since then because most marine debris starts as urban trash or street litter.  Our efforts here in the Arroyo are important to help to stop trash from making it to the ocean.  The Coastal Commission also says that the event is “…a moment to share with one’s neighbors, family, and friends, coming together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our environment”.

Come volunteer and join us to clean up our portion of Arroyo Simi near Villa Campesina Park!  We will be picking up trash from the Arroyo Saturday morning, September 17 between 9 am to noon. The trash will be weighed and results reported to the Coastal Commission.

It’s ok if you can’t stay the entire time, any contribution of time helps.  Please meet us at Villa Campesina Park, 4704 Leta Yancy Road next Saturday morning.  For more information on our event, please go to www.moorparkca.gov/coastalcleanup or call (805) 517-6233.
