    About the Film:
Runaway Slave follows conservative Baptist minister C.L. Bryant around the country, trying to discern why the black community votes 95 percent for the Democratic Party. Along the way Bryant examines the civil war-era Underground Railroad, which brought “runaway slaves” across the Mason-Dixie line to freedom . Then we learn some interesting facts : it was not the Democrats, but the Republicans who initially opposed slavery; and it was only due to Republican support in Congress that LBJ was able to pass the Voters Rights Act of 1965, which was fiercely opposed by the southern Democrats. Yet due to LBJ’s” New Frontier” and its many misguidedly generous welfare programs, the black community in general has not progressed in the way the initial legislation had intended, but become more dependent on government handouts. Towards the end of the movie, it becomes clear that black conservatives are in fact the “new” runaways slaves, creating a contemporary Underground Railroad, with many members of this movement vilified by black leaders for failing to adopt an abject sense of victimhood.
