LOS ANGELES – Baby animals had the spotlight today at Los Angeles Union Station as commuters exited Metrolink trains this morning. Performing greeter duties were a donkey foal, a calf, a colt, a lamb and a kid at the annual petting farm provided by Metrolink and the LA County Fair. In addition to petting animals, people were reminded to avoid car traffic and use convenient Metrolink service to travel to the LA County Fair at Pomona Fairplex Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 22.
“Metrolink and the LA County Fair want to put a little fun in the work day and giving commuters a chance to pet baby animals here at Union Station was a nice surprise,” said Metrolink CEO Stephanie Wiggins. “The annual petting farm is an enjoyable way to start the day and remind people that Metrolink offers special train service to the LA County Fair.”
Metrolink San Bernardino Line Saturday and Sunday trains will make a special stop at the Fairplex Station after 10 a.m. Metrolink also scheduled an additional evening train departing the Fairplex for Union Station at 8:30 p.m.
“We look forward to this every year,” said Miguel A. Santana, president and CEO of Fairplex. “We enjoy giving ‘city folk’ a chance to learn about farm animals and agriculture with our mini petting farm, and to let them know they can take Metrolink to the Fair on weekends. We have a Metrolink platform right on the fairgrounds so it makes the trip convenient.”
Fair-goers can take advantage of Metrolink’s $10 Weekend Day Pass with a free shuttle from the train platform to the front gate. Metrolink customers also receive discounted single-day admission tickets of $12 for adults and $6 for children at the Fair when they purchase online at www.lacf.com.
Metrolink has made the special weekend stops at the Fairplex Station during Fair season since 1993.
The animals at the petting farm were cared for by professional handlers and were under a veterinarian’s supervision. People who handle animals were encouraged to wash their hands afterward to prevent the possible spread of disease.
