Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release
On 10/30/20, Moorpark Police Department patrol units were dispatched to 275 W. Los Angeles Avenue reference a subject whose throat had been slit. Upon arrival, deputies learned the victim had been having a conversation with a female acquaintance when Joseph Oliveira approached him and without provocation, used an unknown object to cut a portion of the victim’s neck.
Oliveira also made a stabbing motion at the victim, which caused an additional injury to his upper extremities. Oliveira fled the area prior to the deputies’ arrival. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
An off-duty Sheriff’s sergeant was in a nearby business and noted Oliveira to be a suspicious subject. When the sergeant called in his observations, Moorpark Special Enforcement detectives recognized Oliveira’s description as matching the suspect description provided by the victim.
While detectives were contacting Oliveira, he attempted to flee from them. After a brief foot pursuit, detectives were able to catch up to Oliveira and take him into custody after a brief struggle.
Oliveira was booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility for 664/187 PC – Attempt Murder and 69 PC – Resisting Executive Officer. His bail was set at $1,030,000 and his court date is scheduled for 11/03/20 at 1:30 p.m. in Ventura Superior Courtroom 13.
