Oxnard, CA – Ventura Citizens for Energy Independence (VCEI) is a proud community partner of the Nyeland Promise Food Pantry. To support efforts to end hunger in Nyeland Acres, VCEI provided the pantry with a large freezer to store perishable protein items.
The new freezer will allow Nyeland Promise to accept perishable food donations they have previously been forced to turn down.
Mary Anne Rooney, Executive Director of the Nyeland Promise said, “Through strong partnerships, the Nyeland Promise will transform one of the most disadvantaged communities in Ventura County to create a pathway to a better life and eliminate the cycle of poverty. We are grateful for our partnership with Ventura Citizens for Energy Independence .”
Donations from VCEI coalition members contributed to the purchase of the freezer. VCEI continued the spirit of giving by volunteering at a Nyeland Promise Food Pantry distribution on Friday, December 20th. The food pantry gave away 150 turkeys donated by Ventura County Food Share to families ahead of the holiday.
The food pantry in Nyeland Acres typically opens the 4th Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am -11:00am at the Garden Acres Municipal Water Company in Oxnard. The food pantry distributed nearly 80,000 pounds of food to local families in need in 2019.
Nyeland Promise is designed to provide the residents of Nyeland Acres with support, resources, advocacy, encouragement, services and basic needs to transform their lives and families. These goals were inspired by the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development adopted in 2015 to “Transform our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
Ventura Citizens for Energy Independence supported Nyeland Promise in 2019 through sponsoring events, community barbecues, and school supply giveaways in addition to the donation of the industrial freezer that was their top need.
