VENTURA, Calif. – The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced today that Victor Villanueva Legaria (DOB 06/13/90), of Oxnard, was convicted by a jury on July 20, 2023, of two felony counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14 and one felony count of lewd acts on a child, aged 14 or 15. The jury also found true the special allegations that Legaria took advantage of a position of trust or confidence to commit the offenses and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.
Legaria, who shared a home with the victim, sexually abused her multiple times between 2016 and 2020. According to the testimony, the victim was just 11 years old when the abuse began. In 2020, the victim reported the abuse to a family member and the Oxnard Police Department was called. Responding patrol officers and detectives with the Oxnard Police Department Family Protection Unit investigated the crimes.
Deputy District Attorney Twyla Atmore, a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Sexual Assault Unit, prosecuted the case.
“By its very nature, the sexual abuse of a child always occurs in secret,” said Atmore. “Thanks to the bravery of one young woman, her abuser was brought out of the dark to face justice.”
Legaria is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 45 of the Ventura County Superior Court.
