Port Hueneme | Hit and Run Traffic Collision Fatality – Driver Located and Arrested for 187 PC Homicide

Port Hueneme Police Department – Incident Press Release

On 9/30/20 at approximately 5:30 AM, Police, Fire, and Paramedics responded to the area of Ventura Road and Teakwood Street in reference to a traffic collision that occurred involving a vehicle striking a bicyclist.  The preliminary investigation revealed a silver-colored sedan was traveling NB on Ventura Road and collided with a bicyclist crossing EB on Teakwood Street.  The bicyclist, identified as John Romero (40-year-old, Port Hueneme resident) succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Approximately an hour later, while Investigators and Police were still on scene conducting their investigation into what had happened, the driver of the vehicle returned on his own.  The driver, identified as Anthony Macias (DOB: 09-21-92) was then interviewed.  Based on statements made at the scene, he was arrested and transported to the Port Hueneme Police Department.  While at the station, officers conducted Field Sobriety Testing on Macias and found him to have a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.

Over the course of the next several hours, multiple leads were followed up on from witnesses both at the scene and several who called in with tips about what had happened.  Macias’s vehicle was located just a few blocks away from the collision site.  The vehicle had significant front-end damage consistent with being involved in a collision.  The vehicle was impounded as evidence.  A search warrant was obtained by investigators and executed at the driver’s residence.  Inside, items pertaining to the hit and run collision investigation were located and collected as evidence.

A records check of Macias revealed that he had previously been arrested for DUI less than one year ago.  He was transported to the Ventura County Main Jail with his bail amount set at $500,000.

Thank you to all those who contacted the Port Hueneme Police Department with tips and statements about what had happened this morning.  An arrest was made possible in this case because of the diligent efforts made by both the Police Department and the residents of Port Hueneme who were willing to share what they had seen with us.
