Santa Paula: Park and Rec Extensive Community Involvement

During the February 4, 2020 Santa Paula City Council Meeting, Park and Rec Director Greg Barnes presented a 26-slide presentation showing the depth of the community offerings for the Park and Rec Department ranging from pre-school to senior yoga and youth basketball to cornhole. All age groups are represented in the programs.

Not All Recreation

The department offers health consulting and free tax services. The food group prepares and delivered thousands of meals during the quarter. The Ventura County Area Agency on Aging will be hosting a forum in 2020. The Senior Fair will return in 2020 which drew over 300 attendees when it was last produced.

Park and Building Maintenance

The staff performs maintenance or manages maintenance on all parks and associated buildings in the city. From the Boys and Girls Club roof to tree trimming, all have schedules and work requests

Movie Permits

Director Barnes indicated that Park and Rec is assuming the permitting of the filming in the city.

Commissions

The department is involved in three different city commissions as well as the new Harding Park Advisory Board.

New Events in 2019

The staff provided festive, outdoor holiday lighting at the Train Depot during December, as well as the Santa Ride throughout the city with the aid of the fire department and Council Member Juarez’ special Santa mobile (slide 14).

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities across the Park and Rec domain. For example, the coaches volunteer their time and expertise. Volunteers deliver meals to seniors. Contact Director Barnes for ways to volunteer: [email protected]
