St. John’s Regional Medical Center First in the Tri-County Area to Implant the Aveir™ VR Leadless Pacemaker

    News Release

OXNARD, Calif. – The cardiac team at Dignity Health-St. John’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) was the first in the Tri-County area to implant Abbott’s FDA-approved Aveir™ VR leadless pacemaker system, used for treating certain abnormal heart rhythms.

The Aveir VR leadless pacemaker is the world’s only leadless pacemaker designed to be retrieved – or removed – when it has to be replaced. Like other leadless pacemakers, Aveir VR does not require an incision in the chest to implant the device or insulated wires – known as cardiac leads – that deliver electrical energy to the heart. Instead, the device is implanted directly into the heart’s right lower chamber using a minimally invasive procedure.

“Implanting the first Aveir leadless pacemaker in the central coast region along with our history of implanting the first Micra leadless pacemaker in the region are signs of our commitment to provide our patients with the best and latest technology for treating heart diseases,” said Ali Sovari, MD, Electrophysiologist. “The addition of this new leadless heart pacing device completes and updates our already comprehensive toolbox of cardiac pacing.”

The Aveir pacemaker has a unique mapping capability designed to allow physicians to measure electrical signals within the heart and determine the correct placement of the device before final implantation. It has an increased projected battery life that can be up to two times longer than other currently commercially available leadless pacemakers when using International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard settings.
