(VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.) – December 7, 2023 – The Santa Barbara-Ventura Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) announced on December 7, 2023, that Ventura County Public Works Agency (VCPWA) has received an honorable mention for the 2022-2023 Project of the Year. The recognized project is the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration, Santa Ana Blvd Bridge Replacement Project, which was officially completed on October 13, 2022 in just one year.
This honorable mention recognizes the project’s significant contributions to environmental conservation and infrastructure improvement. The new bridge, taller, wider, and longer, facilitates improved water and sediment flows in the Ventura River, reducing the need for mechanical sediment removal and fostering a healthier habitat for river wildlife.
This achievement marks a crucial milestone in the broader initiative to enhance the environmental health of the entire Ventura River watershed, specifically addressing the longstanding issue of the Matilija Dam’s impact on the habitat of the federally endangered Southern California Steelhead Trout.
The restoration project, funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, not only safeguards river biodiversity and coastal wetland ecosystems but also promises improved flood protection, recreational facilities, and enhanced public access to the Ventura River and Matilija Creek.
The ASCE celebrates VCPWA’s dedication to sustainable engineering practices and environmental stewardship, underscoring the positive impact on the local community and ecosystem.
