Since the onset of COVID-19, the Sheriff’s Office has worked to create plans to minimize the spread of this illness inside the jail facilities as a precaution to protect those who are currently unaffected. Both State and Federal officials have sent out updated guidelines, sometimes daily and part of our internal plan involves taking additional precautions as needed but doing so incrementally.
In light of the most recent guidelines, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has decided to suspend all non-professional social visitations for inmates in both of the county jails, beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020. This measure is taken to protect the visiting public from exposing each other in confined spaces.
Professional visits, including those by attorneys, will still be permitted but only as a non-contact visit.
The Sheriff’s office values visitation as an essential part of inmate rehabilitation but at this time, the health of inmates, visitors and staff must be protected. The suspension of visits will be reevaluated every two weeks and reinstated once it is safe to do so.
All inmates housed at the two county jails, including those who may enter custody in the days and weeks ahead, will be given free telephone calls and writing materials so that they may stay in contact with their loved ones.
