Ventura County Public Works Agency – Watershed Protection Asks for Community’s Input | Upcoming Project to Benefit Flood Zone Residents

Ventura County Public Works Agency – Watershed Protection (VCPWA-WP) is soliciting input on the Ventura River (VR-1) Levee Rehabilitation Project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The project is essential to the protection of those residents, businesses, and other resources that without the VR-1 Levee would be located within the one percent annual chance (also known as the 100-year) flood zone.

In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), VCPWA – WP requests that agencies review the Project Description provided in the project’s Notice of Preparation (NOP) and provide comments on environmental issues related to the statutory responsibilities of the agency. The EIR will be used by VCPWA – WP when considering approval of the proposed project and by other Responsible and Trustee Agencies to support their discretionary actions related to the proposed project. VCPWA – WP is also seeking the views of residents, property owners, and the public regarding issues that should be addressed in the EIR.

The project will involve improvements to the existing VR-1 levee to correct deficiencies identified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and achieve compliance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) levee certification requirements and Corps levee permit requirements. The objectives of the proposed project include:

    • Constructing new, upgrading existing and maintaining levee structures to improve flood protection
    • Achieving compliance with FEMA certification requirements
    • Extending the levee’s capital services life

Comments and feedback may be submitted via mail addressed to Ventura County Public Works Agency – Watershed Protection, Attn: VR-1, 800 S. Victoria Ave., #1600, Ventura, CA 93009 or via e-mail at [email protected], no later than October 8, 2020. For questions call Tyler Barns at 805-654-2064.

You can find additional information about the project on VCPWA website at: www.vcpublicworks.org/wp/venturariverlevee/ceqa/
