Young Artists Ensemble Presents The 41st Annual Teen Summer Musical Les Miserables

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Young Artists Ensemble presents its Teen Summer Musical production of Les Miserables School Edition directed by Mark Andrew Reyes July 29 – August 1, 2021, in the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks.    Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm.  Choreography is by Dani Orjala.  Musical Direction is by Zachary Spencer and the young orchestra is conducted by Susan Treworgy-Calkins.

In France, Jean Valjean is released from years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter. This production is rated PG as some material may not be suitable for younger children.  Les Misérables School Edition is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIshows.com

Director Mark Andrew Reyes has been directing and performing in the Conejo Valley for over 40 years. His legacy of inspiring and educating the youth of this community reaches far and wide from professional performers to educators to those that use the confidence and poise Mark taught them in myriad non-performance careers.

“The Pandemic hit the performing arts very hard,” says Reyes.  “Programs all over the globe suffered. A show’s budget is the first victim. So, how to do such an iconic and popular show on a shoestring budget?  We started from the simple idea that the fight for the right to free and justice for the poor is not confined to any particular era or age. It is universal. With that as a starting point, we pulled from existing Set Pieces; Our Costume Designer combined clothes pulled from cast member’s closets with her own fanciful resources;  Images and styles from the 50’s to the 90’s. Street Punk mixed with Student Chic. Our Paris Beggars could be mistaken for a Hooverville Resident, or a homeless person on the corner of T.O. Blvd. It is not your mother’s version of Les Miz. It is a vision born out of economic necessity.”

Reserved seating for LES MISERABLES is $17 for adults, children, students and seniors.  Limited social distancing seating is also available.  Tickets can be purchased in person at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Box Office or at www.yaeonline.com via Ticketmaster.  The ticket price does not include Ticketmaster fees but does include the $2 BAPAC fee.  Call (805) 381-2747 or visit www.yaeonline.com if you have any questions.

The annual Teen Summer Musical is the crown jewel of the Young Artists Ensemble’s youth theatre programming and a pinnacle of youth theatrical experience in the region with talented teens age 13-19 performing in a professional directed, designed, and choreographed stage musical.  Young Artists Ensemble has received many accolades in the past 40 years including the Encore Statue Award from the City of Thousand Oaks for Excellence in the Arts, and Best Innovative Program 2011, Large District from the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts.  Most recently, it received 38 nominations and thirteen wins for their 2016-17 Productions including nine wins for the teen summer musical.
