Ventura County Sheriff – – Incident Press Release
During the months of July and August 2020, detectives with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Special Crimes Unit concluded an investigation into illegal firearm activity involving a resident of Camarillo.
On August 6, 2020, at about 5:15 PM, detectives with the Sheriff’s Special Crimes Unit conducted an enforcement stop on (S) 35 year old Joel Chaffee near his Camarillo residence. Chaffee was found to be in possession of a concealed firearm inside his vehicle along with several rounds of ammunition. Chaffee is a convicted felon who has served time in state prison for other illegal firearm offenses. This felony conviction prohibits Chaffee from purchasing, owning, or possession of firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition.
Following Chaffee’s arrest, detectives subsequently executed a search warrant at his residence located in the 800 block of Paseo Camarillo. During the warrant service, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, high capacity magazines, gun parts, and two additional firearms were located. An unserialized, self-manufactured .223 caliber short-barreled assault style rifle was seized. These firearms are commonly referred to as “Ghost Guns” because they are privately made firearms that lack serial numbers or markings. A records check revealed all of the firearms seized were unregistered.
Joel Chaffee was arrested for several felony weapons offenses. He was booked at the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility where he was later released on his own recognizance.
