On 4/13/2020, deputies assigned to the Lockwood Valley Sub-Station concluded an investigation into a Lockwood Valley resident, Matthew Simmons, for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Simmons had three prior felony convictions and was prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition. Lockwood Valley Station deputies served a search warrant at Simmons’ residence with assistance from personnel with the Sheriff’s Narcotics and Gang Units and California State Parks.
During the execution of the search warrant, Simmons was detained as he drove away from his residence. Deputies searched Simmons’ vehicle and discovered he had a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle. Deputies searched Simmons’ residence and located 14 additional firearms including assault rifles, a sawed-off shotgun, a .50 caliber rifle, and thousands of rounds of ammunition for the various caliber firearms Simmons possessed.
Simmons was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility for the following felony charges: PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon in possession of a firearm, PC 30305(a)(1) – Felon in possession of ammunition, PC 30605(a) – Possession of assault weapon, PC 30610(a) – Possession of a .50 BMG, PC 30600(a) – Import/manufacture assault weapon/.50 BMG, PC 25400(a)(1) – Carry a concealed firearm within vehicle, PC 25850(a) – Carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, PC 27545 – Unlawful transfer of firearm, and PC 18720 – Possession of substance, material, or any combination with intent to make any destructive device/explosive.
On 4/14/2020 Simmons was released from custody after posting bail.
