Nature of Incident: Attempted Kidnapping Suspect Arrested after 7-hour Manhunt

Narrative:
On the evening of Thursday, September 27th, deputies from the Moorpark Station arrested James Tangherlini, 34 years old of Moorpark, for the attempted kidnapping of a female victim. The arrest capped a near seven-hour manhunt.
The case began earlier that day, in the 4700 Block of Moorpark Avenue. Sheriff’s Dispatch received several 911 calls describing what appeared to be a battery in progress at the location. When deputies arrived, they contacted a 60-year-old female, who indicated that a former business associate, who the victim hadn’t seen in over two years, attempted to grab and carry her out of her apartment. The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of deputies. The victim told deputies she heard a knock at her front door and when she opened it, the suspect, identified as James Tangherlini, pushed his way into the apartment, grabbed her and forced her outside. Tangherlini was then confronted by the victim’s two adult sons who fought with Tangherlini, forcing him to release the victim. Tangherlini then fled the scene. Deputies attempted to contact Tangherlini at his residence but learned from family members that he intended to evade law enforcement to avoid being arrested.
Over the next several hours, deputies, with the assistance of detectives from the Moorpark Investigations Bureau, utilized a variety of investigative leads and resources to find Tangherlini. At about 9:30 pm, deputies received information that Tangherlini was returning to the city of Moorpark after having fled to the Los Angeles area immediately following the attack. Deputies located Tangherlini driving his vehicle and conducted a high-risk vehicle stop, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Tangherlini was arrested for Attempted Kidnapping and Burglary and booked at the Ventura County Jail. He is currently in custody awaiting trial with bail set at $200,000.00
