Ventura Police Department – Incident Press Release
On October 6th 6:22 AM the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call from an employee of the 76 Station, 2757 Johnson Dr., reporting that a robbery had just occurred and the suspect had left the area on foot.
During the investigation officers learned that the suspect entered the business and approached the one employee behind the counter. The suspect told the clerk to give him money. No weapon was displayed, although the suspect had his hand in a jacket pocket, which caused the employee to think the suspect was armed. The employee placed an undisclosed amount of cash on the counter. The suspect took the money and started to leave just as another customer entered the business. He then put the money back on the counter and left without taking any cash.
Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspect. The employee and the one customer that walked into the business were not injured as a result of this crime.
At approximately 9:17 AM, a call was received by employees of the same gas station reporting that the suspect had returned and was seen across the street from the business. Officers responded and took the suspect, later identified as John Smith, DOB: 07/07/89, Vagrant, into custody without incident. He was positively identified as the suspect.
Smith was arrested for robbery and possession of a controlled substance. It was also discovered he was wanted out of Oxnard for an unrelated burglary.
A review of the Ventura County Superior Court website shows that Smith has multiple prior convictions for burglary, resisting arrest, petty theft, battery, under influence of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, disturbing the peace and vandalism.
